Periodontal Care
About Periodontal Care
Periodontal disease — commonly known as gum disease — is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. At Smiles on Enterprise in Oak Brook, IL, Dr. Jessica Reddy offers comprehensive periodontal care ranging from early-stage gingivitis treatment to deep cleaning procedures for more advanced cases. Treating gum disease promptly is essential not only for your oral health but for your overall systemic health — research consistently links periodontal disease to heart disease, diabetes, and other serious conditions.
The Periodontal Care Process
Treatment begins with a thorough evaluation of your gum tissue, including measuring periodontal pockets — the spaces between your teeth and gums. For early-stage gum disease, a professional cleaning and improved home care routine are often sufficient to get things back on track. For more advanced cases, Dr. Reddy recommends a deep cleaning — also known as scaling and root planing — which goes well beyond a routine cleaning. During this procedure, Dr. Reddy removes tartar and bacteria from below the gumline and smooths the root surfaces to help gum tissue reattach and prevent future buildup. It is performed under local anesthesia for complete comfort. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing and confirm the disease is stabilized.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are the signs of gum disease?
A: Common signs include red, swollen, or tender gums; bleeding when brushing or flossing; persistent bad breath; receding gums; loose teeth; or changes in your bite. Many patients have no symptoms in the early stages, which is why regular checkups are critical.
Q: Is gum disease reversible?
A: Gingivitis, the earliest stage, is fully reversible with professional treatment and consistent home care. More advanced stages can be managed and stabilized but not fully reversed.
Q: Is scaling and root planing painful?
A: The procedure is performed with local anesthesia so you will not feel pain during treatment. Some soreness and sensitivity in the days following is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Q: How can I prevent gum disease?
A: Brush twice daily, floss once daily, avoid tobacco use, eat a balanced diet, and maintain regular professional cleanings at least twice a year.

Cost of Periodontal Care
Scaling and root planing at Smiles on Enterprise typically ranges from $200 to $400 per quadrant. Most insurance plans provide partial or full coverage for periodontal treatment. Our team will confirm your benefits and discuss any out-of-pocket costs before beginning treatment.
How Long Does It Take?
Scaling and root planing is typically completed over two appointments — one per side of the mouth — lasting 60 to 90 minutes each. A follow-up is scheduled 4 to 6 weeks later to assess healing.
Post-Care Instructions
- Some soreness, swelling, and sensitivity is normal for several days after treatment.
- Rinse with warm salt water 2 to 3 times daily to reduce inflammation.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush gently around treated areas.
- Avoid tobacco products, which significantly impair healing.
- Take any prescribed antibiotics or medications as directed.
- Keep all follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery.

I came here to establish care with a new dentist after moving back to this area. Nice location, with friendly staff. Very easy to set up an appointment and good communication. Dr. Ballesteros was very open about any concerns I had and thoroughly explained everything he was doing.Posted on Google![]()

One minute you’re enjoying a Sunday with friends and the next you’re aggressively slamming your front tooth into a bottle while attempting to stop it from overflowing. Enter my newly chipped front tooth. We had just moved to the area a few months before and I hadn’t gotten around to finding a new dentist yet. I had resigned myself to looking like a bad boxer for weeks, knowing how hard it is to get a dentist appointment. I looked at ZocDoc and found this place not only had an opening for the next day but Dr. Jess had received a 5 star ratings - what wizardry is this?? I arrived expecting to wait in a dull room until they had time for me. I was welcomed with bright lights, an open and friendly waiting area, an awesome front staff, and was offered water. Not that I would have time to drink any as my appointment started right on time. Dr. Jess and her staff are amazing. She fixed my tooth in less than an hour and now you can’t even tell I do dumb things. I cannot recommend this office enough and I tell everyone to check it out!!Posted on Google![]()

I been wanting to have a replacement denture for a while but my request was dismissed by dentist who I like which is understandable because I know it will be a lot of work. Well, Dr. Ballesteros who just opened this “SPA” like clinic in Oakbrook, took the challenge and masterfully gave me a new smile. He is precise, perfectionist but not controlling. Having the lab on site is also an added bonus as they can correct issues efficiently. I will be forever grateful for Dr. Ballesteros and his team for their great work! Now I can’t stop SMILING 😁Posted on Google![]()

I cannot recommend this dental practice more! As someone with childhood dental trauma, I’ve gone about 15 years avoiding the dentist. About a month ago, suffering from tooth pain at 3am, made a ZocDoc appt with Smiles on Enterprise and I am so happy I found them. I was greeted by Amanda who has been an absolute angel with me. She is friendly and worked with my insurance to make sure I got the best deal possible. I ended up needing a root canal on two teeth along with all the fun that comes with it. Dr. Jim was very patient working with me and gave me a play by play of everything he was doing. I can be difficult as I’m still learning to calm down at the dentist. Brandi, who assisted Dr. Jim for my posts, prep and crowns, is also an angel. She has a great beside manner and is super careful when inside my mouth. I’m thankful she was there because she really did calm me down. The whole office is extremely clean and spotless. Thank you so much Smiles on Enterprise!Posted on Google![]()
